Reconstruction and rehabilitation of 13 tunnels on the Niš-Pirot M1.12 main road

Realization: 2005 - 2006

Since the road alignment is practically cut into the limestone rock, 13 tunnels having the total length of 1045 m were constructed. However, all 13 tunnels were considered as bottle necks since they were constructed with small clearances, 6.5 m wide pavement and height of 4.0 m. Since majority of the tunnels lacked in lining system, water of different intensity was identified on the tunnel walls.

During 2005 and 2006 works were performed on rehabilitation of the said tunnels thus resulting in increased clearance of 4.50 m and pavement width of 7.10 m. Waterproofing and drainage works were also carried out in all tunnels. The waterproofing system was protected by constructing the 30 cm thick reinforced concrete lining. The accumulated water was routed through the drain pipe, 160 mm in diameter, placed on the either tunnel side. The executed works have significantly affected the level of services and safety of traffic participants.
