GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE RAILWAY LINE

The Belgrade - Bar railway line is a single-track line for combined transport. It was constructed and put in operation in phases in the period 1952 - 1976.

The railway line is 454.8 km long, 287.4 km on the territory of Serbia and 167.1 km on the territory of Montenegro. The minimum curve radius is 300 m, design speed is 80-120 km/h and axial load is 22.5 t. The maximum gradient on the railway line is 25 per mille (on the Podgorica - Kolašin section). The highest point on the line is the town of Kolašin (at 1,030 m.a.s.l.) while the lowest point is the town of Bar (12 m.a.s.l.).

The railway line passes through 254 tunnels, which total length is 144.4 km, namely 24% of the railway line runs through tunnels. The longest tunnels are "Sozina" of 6176 m and "Zlatibor" of 6169 m. On the Belgrade - Bar railway line 234 concrete or steel bridges in total length of 14,600 m were designed. Due to landscape diversity and various obstacles, different structural concepts were applied to bridges built out of concrete and steel or a combination of both. Due to very demanding field conditions, many of bridges on the Belgrade - Bar railway line are the greatest design and civil engineering masterpieces. The best example for this assertion is "Mala Rijeka" Railway Bridge with the highest piers in Europe. "Mala Rijeka" Bridge is 498 m long and its height above the river level is 200 m. The railway line passes through 73 stations with tracks in total length of 158 km. The line is equipped with signaling, interlocking and telecommunication systems and fully electrified with 25 kV, 50 Hz single-phase system.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RAILWAY LINE

According to the European Agreement on Main International Railway Lines (AGC), the Belgrade - Bar railway line belongs to international railway network of "E" lines. In the AGC Agreement the number E-79 was given to the Belgrade - Bar railway line.

It connects the most important world sea routes (America, Mediterranean, Middle East and Far East) to main European railway lines. In the European network, the Belgrade - Bar railway line connects the Mediterranean Basin to the following railway lines:

- E-70, Paris - Milan - Zagreb - Belgrade - Sofia - Istanbul - Ankara;

- E-85, Budapest - Subotica - Belgrade - Niš (Kraljevo) - Skopje - Thessaloniki - Athens;

- E-66, Belgrade - Vršac - Timisoara, which is via E-56, Budapest - Timisoara - Bucharest railway line connected to the following main lines: E-50, Paris - Zurich - Vienna - Budapest - Kiev - Moscow and E-95, Moscow - Bucharest - Sofia.

The Belgrade - Bar railway line is the shortest railway link connecting south part of Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean Sea to European Corridor Xand ports on the Danube River (Corridor VII). Pan-European Corridors X and VII adjoin one another in Belgrade.

The railway line is the only link between Albanian railways and Europe.

This railway line in the national network, together with railway lines on the Corridor X, is a backbone of the railway system. ]]>

The industrial zone in Novi Pazar is planned to be provided with freight station accompanied by relevant facilities. The passenger station in Novi Pazar is positioned near ''Careva Ćuprija'' thus enabling good connection with the city arterials. Spatial conditions allow construction of station and related facilities. The line is 20 km long and designed to support speed of maximum 120 km/h.

This 760 mm narrow-gauge railway line that connects Šargan Vitasi and Mokra Gora Stations was a segment of the former Belgrade-Sarajevo narrow-gauge railway line. It was built in 1930s to enable connection of villages on Tara and Zlatibor Mountains with the rest of the world.

From technical aspect, the studied line is interesting due to its unusual loop that enables the line to overcome the big altitudes between Mokra Gora and Šargan. The so-called ''eight'' was 13.5 km long and was running through 20 tunnels, 3 bridges and one viaduct.

Since technological progress minimized the importance of the line, in 1974, the permanent way was dismantled although track bed and structures were restrained. Fifty years later, the railway line was rehabilitated for tourist purposes and became a unique on-rail museum. Technical concept was based on reconstruction and development of the remaining railway line elements (tunnels, bridges, small structure, track bed and other) and construction of accompanying infrastructure facilities required for proper functioning of the line and acceptance of passengers.

The segment of the narrow-gauge line that connects Belgrade and the Adriatic Sea was reconstructed and put into operation in 2001. This section runs from Šargan-Vitasi to Mokra Gora and includes the famous "Šargan Eight'' that represents attraction for passengers travelling by ''Nostalgia'' tourist train. This reconstructed segment is planned to be connected to Višegrad on one side and Branešci Station on the Belgrade-Bar railway line on the other. Construction of new line sections will upgrade the tourist potentials of Zlatibor and Tara Mountains and Drina River. From Šargan-Vitasi to Kreman, the track shall be laid on the existing bed in the length of 4 km. From Kreman to Branešci Station, three variants of the new alignment are proposed. The planned structures and accompanying facilities shall be in compliance with the already built structures, i.e. traditional method of construction shall apply. The line is 20 km long and supports the speeds not exceeding 30 km/h.

The railway line is of great national and international significance: according to AGC Agreement it was classified in the group of the most important main international railway lines in Europe (E-70). It is a part of pan-European priority Corridor 10 and belongs to High Performance Railway Network in South East Europe. State of this railway line and service level that could be provided are inconsistent with its significance in the railway network of Serbia and Europe, which is reflected to its attractiveness for users and relatively low traffic volume. For the above-mentioned reasons it was decided to modernize the existing railway line, which include its rehabilitation, electrification and equipping with up-to-date signaling/interlocking and telecommunication devices as well as its upgrading for combined transport. Works on this railway line shall be financed by the credit facilities of the European Investment Bank (EIB). After completion of this project, the service level of the railway line will be significantly increased and it will become more competitive than road transport on the corridor and alternative railway routes in South East Europe. This Final design includes civil works on the railway section from Ćele Kula to Staničenje in length of 59.2 km. This railway section passes through 9 stations, 11 stopping places, 138 culverts and 31 level crossings. The works include: rehabilitation of substructure using up-to-date materials, replacement of all permanent way elements, replacement of culverts and development of level crossings. Concrete drain channels and cable conduits shall be placed into trenches at level crossings as a functional preparation for railway line electrification.

The designed works shall ensure:

  • Unification and increase of running speed
  • Increase of line throughput (category D4 - 225 KN, 80 KN/m)
  • Necessary efficient length of station tracks
  • Increase of track bearing capacity

The existing line is a single-track electrified railway line provided with rails, type 49E1, laid on wooden sleepers with track fastening, type ''K'', embedded in limestone ballast.

The design herein included as follows: reconstruction of the existing track, construction of additional track plus track in ''Krnjača'' passing station together with relevant connections; reconstruction of track and connections in ''Pančevački Most'' railway post; construction of new stopping place near Krnjača Settlement; electrification, extension and reconstruction of overhead catenary system, and installation of signaling/interlocking and telecommunication systems.

Rehabilitation works are also planned to be performed on the bridge over the Danube River (''Pančevački Most''). The works will be executed in stages: after rehabilitation of pavement structure to Belgrade, pavement structure to Pančevo shall be reconstructed. Once the pavement works have been completed, works on reconstruction of the central bridge segment will commence (first right track and then left track).

The first stage includes construction of new track (''right Banat''). Once the track has been put into operation, works will commence on the existing track (''left Banat''). For the new permanent way structure, rails, type 49E1, class 260, shall be laid on wooden sleepers with elastic track fastening. All switches will be of type 49Е1-300-6°. Tracks and switches are to be welded into long continuous sections.

The new platform is planned to be constructed in ''Krnjača Most'' stopping place. The platform shall be 220.0 m long, 7.0 m wide and 35.0 cm above the high rail level. Prefabricated paving blocks will be used.

''Krnjača Most'' stopping place shall be also provided with underpass, canopy, retaining walls and approach footways, fully in accordance with the relevant design. ]]>

About 1.5 million tones of goods, out of which 60% are hazardous substances are transported by this railway line. The connecting point of the line on Belgrade side is ''Beli Potok'' Station (Belgrade-Mala Krsna railway line) and on Pančevo side, the solution is offered through the development of Pančevo railway junction. The design was prepared fully in accordance with conditions issued by competent authorities, traffic requirements and site survey so as rational technical and technological solutions may be obtained. The key point on the corridor is the road-railway bridge over the Danube River that according to all technical and economic parameters is supposed to be the most important structure identified on the studied bypass line. The central bridge structure above the riverbed is composed of 4 truss simple beams having the total length of 600 m. The approach structures for the railway line are composite simple beams while for road vehicles, the approach structures are designed as prestressed girders. Viaducts are planned at km 2+377.55 (L=270 m), and km 2+735.405 (L=360 m), and triangles at km 0+514.86 (L=540 m). The bypass railway line is single-track electrified line, 29 km long, designed to support the speed of 120 km/h. The line connects junctions in both Belgrade and Pančevo. Three new stations, 2 tunnels and 19 bridges are planned to be constructed. All level crossings are grade-separated. Design works referring to the bypass line and highway that share the same bridge required engagement of multi-disciplinary approach and permanent harmonization of different works.

Since 2002 when the Serbian Railways PE has launched the program for development and upgrading of the unsecured level crossings, the Institute of Transportation CIP prepared complete design documentation for more than 30 level crossings within the Serbian Railways Network.

The basic principle governing the safety estimation on level crossings is  number of traffic incidents reported. Methods for fulfillment of this requirement are different and depend on the both present and required safety of every particular level crossing

The design deals with three aspects governing increment of traffic safety on level crossings: construction, electro-technical and traffic measures.

Construction works include modification of road elements (road widening, construction of footways, correction of the road reference level), modification of pavement structure followed by development of both substructure and permanent way of the line in the level crossing area. Solutions developed during the last five years were mostly based on application of advanced materials such as rubber panels.

Electro-technical devices may operate either mechanically or automatically. Dependent on level crossing location, automatic devices may be controlled remotely, by using adequate control signals or may be activated by pushing the relevant taster. Any automatic device shall be provided with the following: instrument house, semi-barriers, level crossing signals, switching on-off elements and relevant cabling system.  

Traffic-technological requirements include placement of relevant traffic signalization.

Designs for level crossing development also include traffic operation technology to be applied in the course of execution of works.

The purpose is to define the development of infrastructure capacities together with long-term technical solutions for tracks and similar facilities to meet the both passenger and freight traffic demands in the wider gravitation area.

The design deals with reconstruction and modernization of stations and the existing tracks of the Niš-Preševo-Macedonian border railway line, 156 km long, for the maximum speed of 120 km/h. The works include as follows: general overhaul of both substructure and permanent way and enlargement of track formation to 6 m, overhaul of the catenary and signaling, telecommunication and interlocking systems. Level crossings were also upgraded according to the road category. Reconstruction is planned to be performed in ’’Bela Reka’’, ’’Veliki Borak’’, ’’Stepojevac’’ and ’’Vreoci’’ Stations.
