Railway Junction in Ljubljana

box1

The original railway junction in Ljubljana was burdened with numerous problems such as: inadequate capacities, bottlenecks, numerous level crossings, and increased traffic operations, which affected the concept of the junction future development.

This complex task was entrusted to the Institute of Transportation CIP in 1979. The basic concept of the junction development, as proposed by CIP's experts, was established on the following principles and goals:

1. Gradual extension of junction capacities so as railway traffic might run undisturbedly along the entire territory of the Republic Slovenia together with international traffic that gravitate toward this area;

2. All railway capacities on the present locations should be retained and modernized to enable their harmonization into the new technical concept;

3. Separation of freight and passenger transport so as the central city zone may be relieved from freight traffic;

4. Provide high level of traffic safety;

5. Special attention should be paid on station and railway line concepts;

6. Junction should be designed in a way that shall enable economic justifiability and extension in phases, taking into account that each phase should be treated as a completed technological unity;

7. Routing of high speed railway lines through the junction and construction of the by-pass freight line will enable the existing lines to be relieved from the traffic, and modernized to meet the needs of the city and suburban transport;

8. The existing right-of-way shall be utilized to the maximum extent.

The Institute of Transportation CIP has been working on this project for about 10 years and realized successful cooperation with Slovenian Railways and city authorities.
